Carol V. Long, age 83 of Abilene, passed away Sunday, February 19, 2012 at the Salina Regional Health Center in Salina. She was born January 18, 1929 in Chapman, the daughter of Francis and Dorcas (Walter) Dean.
Carol graduated from Halstead Hospital School of Nursing in 1950 and enjoyed a 50-year professional career. She worked from 1974 to 2001 as a staff nurse at Chapman Valley Manor, Chapman. She was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church. Carol was active in the community as a past president of the Dickinson County American Red Cross and winner of the Clara Barton Award. She volunteered as a head coach for Abilene Eagles Girls Softball teams and was a member and former officer of the Abilene Eagles. She enjoyed reading, cooking and bowling.
On March 4, 1951 she married Dean L. Long in Abilene. Survivors include her son Gail Long, Boise Idaho, and Frank Long, Fountain Valley, Calif., brother James Montgomery, Corvallis, Ore., and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Dean on July 15, 2005.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 25, with Father Henry Baxa as Celebrant. Carol’s final resting place will be at the Indian Hill Cemetery, Chapman. Cremation is planned and friends may come by the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral home to sign the register book until service time. Lyda Pearl Holt was born February 1, 1913 in Oklahoma the daughter of Frank and Bertha (Allen) Parsons. She graduated from Alden High School and on August 15, 1937, she married Elzie Holt in Abilene, Kansas.
Together they farmed south of Abilene. Lyda was also a homemaker and worked for RHV Hardware for many years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Abilene, and loved writing poetry, songs, and short stories. Some of her short stories were published in magazines including Readers Digest and other publications. Along with all the writing, Lyda enjoyed her family and collecting.
Lyda is survived by her sons Eldon and his wife Ardis Holt, Michael and his wife Pat, and Walter Holt and his wife Debbie all of Abilene, Kansas; her daughters Lyla and her husband Greg Eyer of Topeka, Kansas and Lucille and her husband Darrell Wiley of Alta Vista, Kansas; 12 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and 19 great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Lyda was preceded in death by her Husband Elzie on November 1, 1996, her grandson Rodney Wetzel, great grandson Derrik Ray, her parents, and 6 brothers and 4 sisters.
Services for Lyda will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at the First Baptist Church in Abilene with Reverend Jack Gilstrap officiating. Her final resting place will be in the Farmington Cemetery near Abilene. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Martin-Becker-Carlson-Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church or to the Dickinson County Hospice and may be sent in care of the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral home, 414 NW 3rd, Abilene, Kansas 67410. Timothy Paul Chaput was born November 1, 1979, in Independence, Kansas the son of Terry and Doris (Emery) Chaput. He grew up in Abilene and graduated from Abilene High School in 1998. He then attended Manhattan Area Technical College in Manhattan, Kansas.
Tim worked for Abilene Machine as an Assistant Engineer. He was a member of the St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Abilene and enjoyed the outdoors, golfing, fishing, playing pool and bowling.
Tim passed away Friday, February 17, 2012 at his home in Abilene at the age of 32. He is survived by his loving parents Terry & Doris Chaput of Abilene; his children Maryssa, Taylor, Alex, and Konnor; sisters Debra Knipp of Independence, Kansas, Terry Lynn Whitworth of Coffeyville, Kansas, Cathy Evans and her boyfriend John White of Ponca City, Oklahoma, Cindy Smith and her husband Jay of Havana, Kansas; brothers James of Independence, Kansas, Mike Chaput and his wife Lisa of Independence, Kansas, Jeff Chaput and his wife Crystal of Abilene, Kansas; 10 nieces and 15 nephews.

Tim’s final resting place will be in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Abilene. Visitation will be Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home. A Parish Rosary will be recited at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Abilene. Samuel LeRoy "Pete" Hottman Jr., 92, Abilene, Died Monday Jan. 23, 2012 at the Abilene Memorial Hospital. He was born March 28, 1919 in Enterprise, Kansas the son of Samuel L. and Margaret (Miller) Hottman.
On September 13, 1945 he married Mabel Crawford in Greens boro, Alabama. They spent their married life on a farm south of Abilene. Mabel passed on March 23, 2002.
He graduated from Enterprise High School in 1938. He served in the United States Navy from 1940-1946 World War II. He later farmed, and worked for TransCanada Natural Gas Pipeline for 27 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Abilene.
Survivors include one son, Larry and his wife Geneva Hottman of Enterprise, Kansas; a daughter, Diane and her husband David Kies, Jr., of Cape Girardeau, Missouri. 3 grandchildren, Todd and his wife Karyn Kies of Santa Maria, California, Tiffiney and husband Matt Smith of Jackson, Missouri; Alan and his wife Andrea Hottman of Leavenworth, Kansas; and five great grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and 5 brothers and sisters.Memorial services will be announced at a later date.
